Mentoring and Editing Services
I am happy to receive writing of any kind, though I have most experience with memoir, poetry, short stories, and speculative fiction. I request that content warnings be included in the submission document or email. You can contact me at enniswelbourne@gmail.com, and I will aim to get back to you within a week!
Mentoring and Editing Agreement | Terms and Conditions
Those who have hired Ennis Welbourne’s Access Narrative mentoring and editing services are referred to as clients in the below document. By providing written confirmation consenting to this agreement, clients agree to the following terms and conditions:
My Fee
I charge £17 an hour. Below are the estimated figures relating to cost. The first column is the word count of the client’s work, then an estimate of how long it would take me in hours, and finally the correlating price.
1,000 | 1.5hrs | £25.50
2,000 | 3hrs | £51
3,000 | 4.5hrs | £76.50
4,000 | 6hrs | £102
6,000 | 9hrs | £153
8,000 | 12hrs | £204
For commissions of 4,000 words or over, or for 6hrs or more of my time, I ask for a deposit of half the estimated cost to be paid before starting written feedback.
If I find need to go beyond the initial commission time agreed to complete the edit, I will pause my feedback and check-in with the client on how they wish to proceed.
My fee should be paid via PayPal, Ticket Tailor, or bank transfer, within 14 days of being issued, unless otherwise agreed. Payment transaction fees are to be paid by the client. Receipts are available on request.
New Clients
I provide feedback on up to 4,000 words of creative writing for new clients. This introductory cap for the first piece of editing work is in place so we can see if we are compatible before moving forward with longer commissions.
Example pricing for new clients:
3hrs of written feedback on 2,000 words – this would be £51 to be paid within 14 days of receiving my written feedback.
6hrs of written feedback on 4,000 words with a 1hr mentoring session – this would be £119 total, with half of this (£59.50) to be paid as a deposit.
If your work is longer than 4,000 words, it may be useful for me to read the work in it’s entirety so the extract of written feedback I give has the context of the whole work. My feedback comments will include my thoughts on how the extract links to the rest of the work. I would suggest booking a mentoring session for a verbal exchange on any thoughts and questions around the wider text.
Written Feedback
Once I have received your work and any agreed upon deposit has be paid, I will send you an editable Google Drive document with my feedback comments within 21 days.
I provide written feedback by adding digital ‘comments’ to specific words or lines of text. I will position my feedback as suggestions based on personal opinion. You can expect my feedback to centre around: narrative meaning and wider context, clarity and intention, style and technique, formatting and punctuation.
I will respond to replies to my feedback comments for up to 7 days after I have sent this document to you.
Sensitivity Reading
As part of providing feedback on meaning in a wider context, I will be looking for issues of representation and bias on the page. This may include comments on topics such as stigma, discrimination, marginalisation, violence and oppression. I am not a replacement for sensitivity readers with other specialisms beyond my lived experiences, for example, a person of colour or a trans woman. For personal justice reasons, I do not feel I can offer an opt-out to this as part of my services.
Mentoring Session
You may choose to have an hour’s video call mentoring session with me over Zoom. This gives time to: clarify meaning on any feedback points, hold space for your responses – what you agreed with, or didn’t, and why – acknowledge the positive qualities of your work, discuss your ideas going forwards with the piece, and talk about future editing work if desired.
Cancellations and Refunds
All payments are non-refundable once services begin, unless the conditions described below are met.
The client may, at any point during the reading, cancel their demand for mentoring and editing services. Unless a separate agreement is reached, payment remains non-refundable. Any concerns or complaints should be made to me in writing and I will try to resolve them. If we cannot agree on an issue, we can turn to a third-party for mediation to help resolve it.
I reserve the right to refuse service to anyone demonstrating inappropriate behaviour. I reserve the right to stop reading the manuscript at any given moment, provided I issue an immediate warning to the client as well as justification. Should I stop, the client will receive a report of the content read at that point. The client will receive a refund equal to the words read. Should I fail to complete the read or notify the client that I am stopping within 30 days of receiving the initial payment, the client will be refunded in full.
Confidentiality and Copyright
Audio and visual recordings of mentoring sessions are not permitted. Clients agree that any creative work shared is their own and does not infringe the copyright of any third party.
Data Retention and Protection
By registering interest or hiring these services, clients agree for Ennis Welbourne to collect their name and email address. This information will not be shared with any third parties. I will retain the clients email exchanges and feedback documents for six years after the relationship ends aligning with the standard civil legal limitation period for break of contract claims. I will retain invoices for six years in order to meet statutory tax compliance and book-keeping obligations. This data will be stored in Gmail and Google Drive. If you would like this data removed sooner, please get in contact via enniswelbourne@gmail.com.
